Giving
Social Ministries:
- S.O.S: every year we host up to thirty homeless people from South Oakland Shelter for a week. We house them, feed them three meals, and offer showers and activities for the evening. This year, we will be hosting them the last week of March.
- St. Patrick's Senior Center: Every month, a group of people go to St. Patrick’s Senior Center in Detroit to prepare lunch on the second Saturday. We donate the food, prepare it, serve it, and clean up.
- Angel Tree: In the fall, we put up Angel Tree gift trees in the narthex. Members can adopt an angel, buy the gift, and return it to be donated to a shelter or other deserving organization.
- Hat & Mitten Tree: Thanks to all who donated so many great hats, mittens, and scarves this year! Our Mitten Tree goodies have been distributed to an Inner City School (the Edmonson Elementary School-Detroit), the Navajo Lutheran Mission, and the South Oakland Shelter.
- Quilt Group: Another outlet is our quilt group, which usually meets twice a month to make baby quilts and receiving blankets for Lutheran Social Services. We also have contributed some of these items to the Navajo Lutheran Mission in Arizona.
- Box Tops for Education: We send box tops for education to the Lutheran Mission in Rock Point, Arizona.
- Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Beit Jala, Palestine: We are responsible for promoting our sister congregation, the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Beit Jala, Palestine, through our off-shoot group, ELCJHL, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land. This committee also oversees the Holy Land scholarship started by our intern Gabi Alabouni.
- We have helped the synod with a shipment of goods to our sister synod in Tanzania, and a virtual shipment of money last year for them to purchase items that are easier gotten in that country.
We also accept donations:
- Electronic Giving: If you are interested providing a donation/offering electronically, please contact the church office.
- Recycling: We are still in the recycling mode here at Antioch. Please don’t forget to bring your newspapers and home stationery, etc. for our Abitibi bin outside. Printer cartridges were sent off last week (from the office collection box) and pop bottles are recycled regularly from the tub in the back hall near the stairwell.
We still are collecting cell phones so if you have a new one, deposit your old one in the cell phone recycling box in the back hall too. We just need the phone itself and if it’s in good shape, attach the charger too. The eye glass box contents have been delivered.
